Modest Needs
Modest needs started with one man who donated 10% of his monthly income
to providing direct, immediate assistance (financial and otherwise) to individuals who have encountered an unexpected, relatively small expense that their budgets simply cannot accommodate but which, if left unpaid, threatens to undermine the quality of that individual's life.

It's become a small foundation, accepting donations and helping others in need. Way to go!

Light Up the World
Low-cost meets high-tech: LUTW designs and manufactures super-low-power lighting for the developing world. The design, using light-emiting diodes, a foot-pedal generator, and a small battery, is able to provide clean, reliable light for off-grid houses.
Dignity Village
A fascinating example of the homeless deciding that it's time to choose their own fates:
Dignity Village is a mobile tent city in Portland, Oregon. It is home for people who might otherwise inhabit doorways and sidewalks, Dignity provides a peaceful community, a clean environment, a center, and safety.
